Purpose:
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the implementation of a shared governance structure and standardized action planning tool and the impact on RN satisfaction, patient satisfaction and RN turnover.

Significance:
Registered Nurse satisfaction is an area of national concern. RN satisfaction impacts patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction physician satisfaction, and turnover.

Strategy and Implementation:
A shared governance structure was implemented in 2004 with the Professional Nursing Cabinet (PNC) oversight of the model. Facility wide RN satisfaction results were presented to the PNC. The PNC holds each department accountable for review of individual department results and development of an appropriate action plan. Directors worked with managers and staff-lead department councils to communicate the results and develop action plans. A standardized action planning tool was developed and implemented to address RN satisfaction issues.

Evaluation:
RN satisfaction (NDNQI RN Satisfaction Survey) improved ranging from 18.7%-166% from 2005-2009. Overall patient satisfaction scores(Press Ganey®)improved from the 20th percentile in 2001 to 99th percentile the last three quarters ending June, 2009. RN turnover improved from 8.8% to 1.24%.

Implications for Practice:
Staff nurse involvement through the implementation of a shared governance structure and standardized RN satisfaction action planning tool will help improve RN satisfaction, turnover and patient satisfaction.
