Purpose:
An innovative model integrating the nursing vision-PSFHS nursing is the recognized leader in relationship-based care, dedicated to excellence in nursing practice balanced with the well being of the caregiver-and professional practice model promotes actions to create and evaluate a culture of safety.

Significance:
A practice model encompassing inspiration, professionalism and metrics employs synergy, builds alignment and promotes accountability at all levels of nursing for quality and safety.

Strategy and Implementation:
Our Professional Practice Model guides nursing practice at all levels. The model identifies relationship based care as our philosophy of care and places the patient in the center of nursing practice. The model schematic locates nursing practice in the context of our organization mission, nursing standards and ethics and requires shared decision making, implementation of evidence based practices and accountability for quality indicator results. Recognition awards and professional development activities are aligned with the model components. Implementation of evidence based practices, nursing peer review and ongoing evaluation of outcomes demonstrates the effectiveness of this innovative model.

Evaluation:
A culture of quality and safety is evident in the metrics selected to evaluate the three components of the vision. Nurse sensitive quality indicators improved. Patient satisfaction increased to outperform national benchmarks. Nurse engagement ratings improved in all Press Ganey categories.

Implications for Practice:
Excellence in nursing practice is essential to positive outcomes. Operationalizing a vision statement through a professional practice model and identification of evaluative metrics promotes alignment and accountability for creating a culture of safety.
