Participants will be able to develop strategies to

·        increase staff participation in the survey,

·        effectively share results with staff

·        develop performance improvement plans that demonstrate positive results

·        celebrate successes

Summary of presentation: RN satisfaction data can be a powerful tool to effect change at both the unit and organizational level. Involving staff in the planning stages of the survey is paramount to achieving a high level of staff participation. Once the survey results are received, timely and effective strategies need to be utilized in the sharing of the data. The ability of staff to interpret these results is key to successful planning for change. Data needs to be presented in a format that is easy to understand and has meaning to the staff. Examples of the utilization of both charts and graphs that illustrate results will be shared with the audience. In addition to portraying unit results, these tools can be used to clearly show how units or hospitals compare with the NDNQI mean and top quartile scores. The data can also be used to identify successes at both the unit and organizational level. Successful organizations embrace their opportunities and celebrate their successes!

Implications for practice: Participation in the RN satisfaction survey provides valid and reliable data that can assist organizations in the identification of strengths as well as opportunities for improvements. The effective utilization of this data increases organizations ability to retain and recruit RNs resulting in lower RN vacancy rates, lower utilization of contract labor and an increased potential for the provision of quality patient care and positive patient outcomes.
