Staffing Plans Made Easy-Dashboards to the Rescue

Elizabeth Walliser, RN, MS, CPHQ, Nursing Excellence, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, 3815 Highland Avenue, Downers Grove, IL 60515

Objectives:
  • Develop a data-driven Staffing Plan based on the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) Principles for Nurse Staffing
  • Identify key metrics used to develop a data driven Staffing Plan

Purpose:
To provide a framework for the collection, analysis and utilization of data for the development of Nursing Staffing Plans

Description of how the session will provide relevant and current knowledge:Staffing plans should be made based on objective and measurable data. Participants will learn how to create efficient tools utilizing key metrics to assist unit managers and direct care nurses in the development of effective staffing plans. Data collection, analysis and utilization will also be discussed with participants. Sources of data and how they can be obtained will be identified.

Summary of Presentation:Nurse Managers and direct care nurses are able to develop staffing plans that ensure implementation of evidence-based guidelines for staffing when they are provided organized data based on key metrics. The presenter has created a dashboard as part of a staffing plan that includes benchmark data based on key metrics identified in the literature to assist unit managers in collaboration with direct care nurses to develop effective staffing plans.

Implications for Practice:Effective staffing plans must encompass the unique needs of the patient population and consider the level of nursing competency and the environment in which care is delivered. Decisions related to staffing can only be made based on data and evidence. The creation of a dashboard for staffing data provides a valuable resource to nurse managers and direct care nurses.
