Abstract

     Educational Objectives:
  1. Describe how a major academic institution uses a balanced scorecard and individual indicator dashboard displays to link NDNQI reports to quality indicators and quality improvement activities at the unit level.
  2. Discuss two (2)) ways to implement alternative adult education strategies to engage and increase competency of unit leaders in utilizing NDNQI data.

     Purpose:
To present a self-learning module for unit leaders

Description of how sessions will provide relevant and current knowledge

This presentation will provide the learner with relevant and alternative ways to engage and provide quality indicator education for leaders at the unit level. This module increases knowledge and competence of unit leaders by helping them to demonstrate use of critical thinking in reading, interpreting and using scorecard data as a tool to increase Unit Performance Improvement. This presentation will provide the learner with a Complete Self – Learning PowerPoint Packet presentation module and posttest.

     Summary of presentation

Our hospital recognized the gap between scorecard data and the ability of the unit leader to utilize this information and engage staff at the bedside. Continuous learning for Nurse Manager’s in today’s fast paced health care system is essential, with numerous initiatives competing for their time. Our Level I trauma academic teaching hospital has an average of 50 nurse managers responsible for an overall daily patient census of 520. The average length of service for nurse managers ranges between 1.1 to 26 years. Data from the previous educational activities was reviewed and feedback collected from nurse managers regarding their various styles of learning and approach to this content.  Combining the expertise of our hospitals NDNQI Site Coordinator and Coordinator of the Nursing Leadership Academy, an educational module was developed targeting an initial competency for training new leaders or those new to quality indicators and unit performance improvement. This module uses the principles of the adult learner to create an effective teaching tool. The “Nursing Balanced Scorecard” module presents definitions, essential content, strategies for implementation at the unit level and a posttest. 100% of Nurse Managers completed this self learning tool as a competency and the evaluation/feedback supports using this method for other educational endeavors.  Benefits seen in this learning module have been:
1.Provides link for managers to the Organization’s Vision, Values & Culture in a measurable way.
2.Provides how the tool can be used to focus on the leverage points for future planning and resources

     Implications for practice

1. Links to evidence-based practice.
2. Provides benchmark data and data over period of time for comparisons as well as Unit Comparison for best practice and in-house references/resources
3. Provides feedback on behaviors and encourages ownership
4. This training module
can be used as a template for future educational activities/needs.
